Hydrangea – Bloom of the Week

Posted on

Each week, I feature a different seasonal flower from San Diego’s gardens and wild spaces in my Bloom of the Week series—both here on the blog and in my Pixels gallery. It’s an ongoing celebration of what’s blooming now—captured through vintage and modern lenses that bring softness, character, and painterly depth to each image. These curated floral photographs are available as fine art prints, wall décor, and nature-inspired gifts—perfect for flower lovers, art collectors, and anyone looking to bring botanical beauty into their space.

A Vacation Bloom in Vancouver

This week’s featured bloom is the beloved hydrangea. While San Diego gardens do have their share of hydrangeas, the climate here can be a little challenging—our hot, dry summers don’t give them the same lush look they achieve elsewhere. On a recent trip to Vancouver, however, I was completely enchanted by the abundance of hydrangeas thriving in nearly every neighborhood. From deep purples to cloud-like whites and multicolored blossoms blending green, pink, and blue, the city seemed wrapped in their vibrant displays.

Hydrangeas are everywhere in Vancouver—lining garden paths, brightening shady corners, and softening urban edges. Their popularity there comes down to climate: Vancouver’s cooler summers, abundant rainfall, and acidic soils create ideal growing conditions, producing rich color variations and large, long-lasting blooms.

Fun Hydrangea Facts

Hydrangeas in San Diego

While Vancouver may be a hydrangea paradise, we do have some stunning hydrangeas here in San Diego—particularly in shaded garden settings and coastal neighborhoods where the weather is gentler. I’ve photographed them in local gardens, where their delicate textures take on a dreamy, glowing quality under backlight and soft bokeh.

From close-up studies of radiant green blooms shot with a Pentacon 50mm vintage lens, to painterly white blossoms captured with my Industar 61 L/Z, these photographs celebrate the hydrangea’s elegance and versatility—whether in a lush Pacific Northwest garden or a tucked-away corner of San Diego.

Although they may not grow as prolifically here as in Vancouver, hydrangeas in San Diego still reward the patient gardener—and the patient photographer—with blooms that feel timeless, romantic, and radiant. That rarity makes them all the more special in my eyes, and a perfect choice for this week’s collection.
